Sermon Title: Community of Pain & Hope

(Luke 17:11-19)

Rev. Erik Kindem, October 13, 2013

Quick Summary:

The healing of the 10 lepers is a story about gratitude, for sure; and also a story about how healing is more a process that unfolds as we walk down the road than an instantaneous event.
But when El Salvadoran Bishop Medardo Gomez attended our local pastor's meeting, he opened up a reading of the story that I'd never considered before :It was the shared pain those ten lepers experienced, he said, the physical and social pain exacted by their disease—that drew them into community. And in that community of shared pain, paradoxically, they also came to know hope.

The remarkable story of the "Subversive Cross" of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in San Salvador, where Bishop Gomez serves, is retold in this sermon.
