Sermon Title: Loving Beyond the Usual Suspects

(Leviticus 19:1-18, 1 Corinthians 3:10-23, Matthew 5:38-48)

Rev. Erik Kindem, February 23, 2014

Quick Summary:

When our children ask, WHY CAN'T I DO SUCH AND SO--ALL MY FRIENDS GET TO! the answer, most often is "That’s not something we do in this family."

What we have in our first lesson today is God, in the role of Parent, laying out in bold, clean lines expectations for how his children are to behave when it comes to dealings with the neighbor. St. Paul affirms the message and Jesus both affirms and intensifies it.

In recent decades, the church has been awakening to a broader definition of “neighbor” than what has prevailed for the past two millennia, and a sense of ethical responsibility that extends beyond the human species to include the rest of God’s creatures and the Earth itself.

The upcoming sabbatical will provide an opportunity for exploring these themes.
